Storm win season opener
Two early tries from veteran centre Karl Harris helped get the Storm off to a great start. With an incredible 9 players making their 1st Grade debuts it was not the patchy start you would have expected.
A healthy crowd of just over 100 spectators made their way Victoria Park for the first rugby league game of the city, with the home side taking control of the game from the opening whistle.
The game was 6 minus when Karl Harris made a great break and rushed 40 metres to score the opening try of the game around 10 in from touch. New signing Carl Strickson a former Sheffield Eagles Academy prospect missed the conversion. New half pairing of Strickson and Storm junior Milkha Basra combined well to stretch the Derby defence with Basra hitting Etherington with a peach of a pass who hit a great line and stepped the full back to score next to the posts. Strickson missed the conversion. Derby fought back well over the next 10 minutes with the Storm defence being tested. Derby scored a try in the corner and failed to convert. The Storm’s tactics of playing three props was being tested and the likes of Jon Hunt, Tim Richardson and Mitchell Keightley all stepping up and wrestling back control of the match. Karl Harris scored his second try with a 70m dash who released by Carl Strickson down the left side. Milka Basra in a man of the match display scored a quick fire double to stretch the lead at half time to 24-4.
The second half started with a bang with Etherington finishing a smart back line move with Strickson scoring the extras. Newcomer and teenage mason Tye scored a try in the corner to take the lead to 3-4. Derby City showed some fight and cored two tries to give them an unlikely sniff in the game. The men in purple fought back with a converted try to Tim Richardson to seal victory in the first game of the new campaign.
